I am supporting Stubbin Wood, a special school in Derbyshire. Their pupils have learning disabilities with many students having additional physical, social and emotional needs which provide various challenges to them.
I am writing to request any help you may be able to offer us.
In October 2019, 6 students from our school, along with 18 other students from 3 other schools from the Bolsover District, coordinated via Derbyshire Education Business Partnership, will be heading over to South Africa for a 10 day expedition, under canvas, where we will:
• Work with two community schools including delivery of First Aid training
• Study the Giraffe population with an ecologist
• Observe and track the local wildlife
For our special needs students this is an amazing opportunity. Many have never left the local area, so for them the chance to travel all the way to South Africa is a fantastic opportunity. The work undertaken will be physically hard and will require students to work in a team alongside mainstream pupils. This provides the opportunity to break down negative preconceived ideas that some people have against people with disabilities. The project empowers our students who are able to achieve something positive for others less fortunate.
