Chesterfield drivers could face traffic disruption from next week

Roadworks are scheduled to begin just off the A61 from next Monday.

Chesterfield drivers could face traffic disruption in coming weeks-due to roadworks taking place just off the A61.

A seven week project will begin on Monday- which is set to improve the layout of the junction at Saint Augustine's.

It follows a number of other works taking place along the stretch of Derby Road in recent weeks.

Derbyshire County Council said: "We're extending the two-lane section on St Augustines Road, Birdholme, on its approach to the junction with the A61 Derby Road, by an extra 100 metres.

"St Augustines Road, between the junctions with St Augustines Crescent and the A61, will also be widened.

"The three sets of traffic signals at the junction of St Augustines Road and the A61 are also being upgraded with more up-to-date signals.

"Work is expected to start on Monday 28 January and is estimated to take until Friday 5 April 2019.

Councillor Simon Spencer, cabinet member for highways said: "“I appreciate that these works may cause some inconvenience but they are necessary improvements to upgrade out of date traffic signals. Extending the two-lane section will also help to ease the problem of traffic backing up as it waits to join the main road.”

Councillor Spencer added: “While the road closure is in place work to repair pavements, damaged by flooding, will also take place.”
