Derby Crown court has heard how Paul Holmes punched another man so hard, medical staff had to place him in an induced coma.
The 47-year-old, of Chepstow Close, Grangewood pleaded guilty to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm following an incident which took place on January 12th.
The court heard how Holmes was involved in an altercation with 62-year-old Graham Sage on Stephenson Place, during which Holmes knocked the complainant unconscious.
Sage was subsequently admitted to hospital with skull fractures and an injury to his brain. He still needs further surgery and his injuries are potentially life-changing.
Judge Shaun Smith sentenced Holmes to 18 months of custody,
