Doe Lea resident planning to take on Sahara desert challenge in a bid to raise funds for cancer research

Gary Allen's hoping to raise money for two cancer charities.

A paramedic for East Midlands ambulance service is aiming to race 250 kilometres across the Sahara desert next year.

45 year old Gary Allen is taking on the challenge in order to raise money for 'Cancer research' and 'children with cancer'.

The 'Marathon Des Sables' is regarded as one of the toughest races on earth, but the Doe Lea resident is confident he can conquer it;

"It's just something that I read about, and its always been at the back of my mind. It'd be quite an achievement, and having done the Chesterfield marathon in the past, I think I'd enjoy it."

He's aiming to raise a total of £20,000 overall, and spoke to Peak FM about what's inspired him to take on such a difficult task; "Some recent family illness spurred me to get on my feet and give something back for the treatment my family has received, and raise hopefully a good amount of money."

"I thought the best way to raise the most cash was to take on the most demanding thing I could possibly think of."

The event takes place next April.
