Plans to replace the ageing Queen's Park Sports Centre have been approved by Chesterfield Council.
A 7 to 3 vote in favour of the plans means work can begin to build a brand new complex across the road from the current centre. Queen's Park Annexe will be home of the new facilities which will allow construction to begin while the current centre continues to operate.
The new sports centre is expected to house a 6-lane swimming pool, multi-purpose sports hall, members gym and squash courts. It will also be able to be used for meetings.
The centre is expected to cost around £8.5 million, with a majority of the money coming from what the council are calling a low interest rate loan repayable over 25 years.
No date has yet been set for construction to begin on the Annexe site but the Council have said they hope the new facility will be open by early 2015.
