Night shelter provided this winter for rough sleepers in Chesterfield

A group of local charities and councils in Chesterfield are coming together to form a Nightshelter for those sleeping rough in the town this winter.

The initiative is run by the Derby City Mission, and funded by three of the area's councils.

Head of Relief from Poverty for the Charity, Phil Morton said: "Over the last year a group of people from various churches in Chesterfield felt it was right to start a WinterNightshelter to combat the needs of local people sleeping rough on our streets with crisis in their lives.

"Over the last twenty years, Pathways the homeless charity, have been helping homeless people found in areas of Chesterfield sleeping rough. These people include men, women and sometimes minors caught in a situation mostly not of their own making. Unfortunately in Winter this isn’t enough and they need our help."

An initiative started by Derby City Mission, who have been running nightshelters for a few years, plus North East Derbyshire District Council, Bolsover District Council and Chesterfield Borough Council have pooled Central Government resources to protect these individuals through our winter months.

Due to the increase in homelessness in our area over the 2017/18 harsh winter, it was decided for the winter of 2018/19 that a nightshelter, using eight church buildings (one in reserve), should be established.

The three councils involved, using Central Government funds will invest £25,000 in the project costing an estimated £30 – 40,000, a shortfall of at least £10,000, which has to be raised locally. The funds will be used to finance; transport (minibus needed), fuel, insurance, bedding, food, two salaried positions, clothing, etc.

Mr. Morton said: "We would ask that you would consider a) volunteering to help at least once a fortnight, making friends and meals with our guests until the night staff takeover and/or b) making a donation to this worthy cause so that many people can be fed and kept warm this winter, whilst trying to find a solution to their homeless needs."

Donations can be made to Derby City Mission, for Chesterfield Nightshelter, through BACS transfer, cheque or cash donations.
