Public toilets in Bakewell to be closed temporarily

The loos on Granby Road won't re-open until April.

Alternative facilities are being made available for local people and visitors during the upcoming two week closure of Bakewell's main toilet block.

Essential repairs to the loos in Granby Road - the first major refurbishment in eight years - mean the male and female toilets will be closed from Friday 15 March until the first week in April. The disabled and parent and child facilities in a nearby block will not be affected by the work.

To address the inconvenience, Derbyshire Dales District Council is temporarily reopening free toilets 100 metres away at Bakewell Riverside, over the river bridge towards the Agricultural Business Centre.

A spokesperson said: "There are few quiet times in Bakewell, but this is work that needs doing urgently and it made sense to take this action before the busy Easter period.

"We are replacing the internal wall panelling system, vanity units and elements of the supporting framework, all of which have deteriorated throughout the service life of the building. As the internal walls connect the male and female sides of the block, there was no option to go for a phased closure unfortunately."
