Chesterfield Royal Hospital says it has joined an increasing number of hospitals by taking the decision to suspend all but the most essential on-site visiting.
A statement on the hospital's Facebook page said: "It’s part of our response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak - the most unprecedented challenge the NHS has ever faced.
"Not only will this enable people to follow the government’s stay at home instruction, it will help to keep our staff protected - so they can stay at work to care for you and your family members at your time of need.
"Please read the information below to understand whose considered essential. We know how worried you’ll be about friends and relatives in hospital - but we’re sure you’ll understand this decision was taken to keep your loved-ones safe in our care.
"We have free NHS Wi-Fi access in the hospital so think about other options to keep in touch including video messaging."
