It's a Boy

April the giraffe gives birth at New York zoo

More than a million people watched on a live stream as April the giraffe gave birth to a calf at a New York zoo.

Fifteen-year-old April delivered in an enclosed pen at the Animal Adventure Park zoo in Harpursville on Saturday.

The park's live stream saw at least 1.2 million people watching as the new mum nuzzled her calf, which slowly began to pick its head up from the floor of the pen and attempt to get to its feet.

It is April's fourth calf. The baby's father, five-year-old Oliver, watched from an adjacent pen.

The privately owned zoo began live-streaming from April's enclosure in February, with people tuning in daily to catch up on the latest developments.

The giraffe has her own website and even a line in apparel. A GoFundMe page has also raised more than $125,000 (£100,000), which will be used by the zoo to care for the animals.

A competition will be held to come up with a name for the calf.

No details have been revealed about the new arrival, but giraffe calves typically weigh around 150lbs (68kg) and are around 6ft tall at birth.

Giraffe pregnancies usually last around 15 months.
