Peter Kay has broken hearts across the UK after announcing his hit comedy show Car Share is over for good.

The Bolton comedian has revealed that while the second series ended on a cliffhanger on Tuesday night, fans will never know what becomes of will they/won’t they couple John and Kayleigh.

Speaking about his decision to leave the show, he said: “There’s only so much you can do in a car and the last thing you want to do is ruin it because I think it’s a lovely thing.

“It’s been wonderful working with Sian, who’s one of my closest friends in the world. We have a good laugh but I think sometimes you’ve got to just leave things.

The news will come as a blow to fans to the car-based comedy show after the series ended with Kayleigh finally confessing her feelings for John – only for him to run away scared.

Avid viewers of Peter Kay’s comedy show have been crossing their fingers that the pair, who have travelled to work together every day since 2015, will become a couple.

In a heartbreaking twist, he even imagines chasing after her in a last minute declaration of love – before it cuts back to him stuck in traffic and potentially losing her for good.

But as the end of the second series comes to a close, it seems both fans and Kayleigh - played by Sian Gibson - will be left deflated forever.

After being accused of "living in a fairy tale", Kayleigh tells John: "I don't live in a fairy tale, John. I just want to be happy."

Laying her cards on the table, she brands him "infuriating", before declaring: "I can't waste any more time John, I don't have time to waste. I'm getting out."

John replies: "Of where?"

Kayleigh tells him: "Out of your car and your life.

"Because I love you, John, and it kills me you don't feel the same."
