Ant and Dec collect the award for Best Presenter for the 17th years running

Ant McPartlin, making his first public appearance since revealing he was splitting from his wife, said it had been a "tough 12 months" and thanked "best mate" Declan Donnelly for his support.

"It's been a tough year for me personally, quite an emotional night, so to kind of top it off with three awards has been... can I have a lie down now? I'm feeling very good, thank-you," said McPartlin.

He added: "I love working with him (Dec) and that was the one thing... I had a very tough summer last summer, I had to face up to a lot of things and my one thing was just getting back to work and getting back to work with my best mate, we done it."

One of their programmes, I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, also won best challenge show, while another - Saturday Night Takeaway - got the Forsyth prize.

Brucie - who died in August - was also remembered by his former co-host Tess Daly, as Strictly Come Dancing won best talent show.

"I'd like to dedicate this award to my friend and yours, the one and only Sir Bruce Forsyth. And I would like to say thank-you for the memories," Daly told the audience.

Other winners included Blue Planet 2, which got the impact award, with narrator Sir David Attenborough urging the audience at London's O2 arena to "protect our beautiful world".

Emmerdale won the serial drama prize; Broadchurch got best crime drama; and best comedy was Peter Kay's Car Share.

Kay, who recently cancelled his upcoming stand-up tour, was absent, however, and co-star Sian Gibson said he was "gutted" he could not make it.

There was also double delight for Doctor Foster, with Suranne Jones winning best drama performance and the show itself picking up best drama.

The awards are voted for by the public and have been running since 1995.
